Ice Station Vadsø

Duncan Harris and Colin Izod are heading back to the Arctic Circle in November to make a documentary around the town of Vadsø in Northern Norway. ‘Ice Station Vadsø’ is a small music festival featuring some legendary musicians, and part of Michèle Noach’s art residency in the town. It’s now 12 years since Big Heart first became involved in Cape Farewell’s original Arctic expedition to Svalbard in 2003. We’re looking forward to being back!

Czech Philharmonic woodwind at Smecky Studios Prague

Filmed some of the finest woodwind musicians in the world in Prague for the Twisted Skyscape project. 18 of the Czech Philarmonic’s wind section players were gathered at the legendary Smecky Studios in Prague to record 5 compositions by contemporary British Composers like Chris Hussey and Gary Carpenter conducted by Shea Lolin. Big Heart was there to make the documentary. Fabulous

Congratulations to Yaba Badoe and Fadoa Films for successfully raising the money for the post production
of her new film ‘The Art of Ama Ata Aidoo’, which Big Heart will be helping out with. Ama Ata Aidoo is the ground breaking Ghanaian writer who has been a great influence on younger West African writers like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ( Half of a Yellow Sun). Find out more at www.amaatafilm.com.

Beth’s Haiti Photography Workshop

Ex Big Heart Media mainstay Beth Newell recently helped run and film a photography workshop for children in Haiti. See her film and find out more at www.viewfinderworkshop.org. It was a huge success and the project has been invited to do another one in Kenya, introducing photography to 40 children living in the shanty towns of Nairobi, partnering with a new secondary school that has recently opened in the Lenana slum. Viewfinder Workshop in Haiti

The money will go towards the equipment – cameras, memory cards & batteries. a printer, paper & ink – all of which will be donated to the school, so that the 40 students and any new children at the school can continue to develop their skills through a dedicated photography club.

Colin Izod sound recording for 'Bluff'

The ‘Biggest Heart’ has been working as sound recordist on his nephew Tim’s short film ‘BLUFF’, written by Garry Charles. The first two days filming took place in Walthamstow E17 over the weekend of June 9th and 10th. Great Fun and more to come!

It’s a clash of class and culture as aspiring impresario Dan Sumpton tries to reconcile his plans for a 60 band Rock festival with the traditional English Country Fair that has been held in the beautiful grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle for 25 years. Remarkably Colin has only ever made films to order. When he met Dan Sumpton he knew he could make a documentary with themes close to his heart – class, rock and roll, and the English Countryside. Spinal Tap meets Downton Abbey anyone?

The CLPE – the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education – is creating an on-line library of videos featuring some of the country’s best known Children’s poets and writers; aiming to engage school children. Big Heart has been filming readings and interviews with these legends.- In early 2011 we filmed with poets Michael Rosen, James Berry, Jackie Kay and Roger McGough, engagements with Grace Nichols and John Agard have followed – looking forward to the next group!
